HS Softball: Monticello Gets By Clinton

In a game heard on WEZC and online at dewittdailynews.com, Monticello overcame a sloppy start in an 11-2 non-conference, high school softball win over Clinton on Wednesday in Monticello.

While the hosts, Monticello was the visiting team for the afternoon. The game was moved to Monticello High School due to construction on the varsity softball field for turf installation. In the event of rain, each side agreed to swap locations this year and next.

Pitching struggled early for each side. Each team had early bases loaded opportunities.

Four walks and a base hit allowed Clinton to go up 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning.

Monticello responded in the top of the second with an RBI single by Annie Robinson.

A two-run triple in the top of the third inning from Avery Schweitzer put the Lady Sages up 4-1.

Two more runs in the top of the fourth put Monticello up 6-1.

Lainey Nichols made it 11-2 with an RBI double for Clinton in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Madison Highland struggled early but settled down to work seven innings of a run ball for the win. She struck out ten, walked four - all in the first inning - and permitted six hits.

Olivia Webb went 5 2/3 innings of relief. She allowed nine runs, five were earned, on seven hits with three walks and a strikeout.

While not a standout statline, she kept Monticello off balance all afternoon, limiting the high-powered Lady Sages offense.

Isa Beery was 3-for-5 for Monticello. Avery Schweitzer was 3-for-4 with a pair of triples and three RBIs. She was the ServPro of Piatt/DeWitt Counties player of the game.

Clinton drops to 2-8. They travel to Central A&M on Friday.

Monticello is 13-3 overall. They will host rival Tolono Unity on Thursday in Illini Prairie Conference action at 4:30 pm.
