Lake Zurich scored ten unanswered runs and held off a late charge by Normal West for a 17-9 win in a high school baseball slugfest Saturday in Normal.
Each team scored three runs in the first inning. Lake Zurich scored two runs in the second and third innings, then exploded for six in the fourth inning.
Normal West cut to a 10-4 deficit with a run in the fifth.
After falling behind 12-4, Normal Community go within 12-9 after a five-run sixth inning.
Chase Knuth was 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs to lead the Wildcats. Sam McCully had a team-best three RBIs. Cooper Temples finished 3-for-4 with a double.
The two teams played a scrimmage following the opener that the Wildcats won 5-4.
Normal West is 12-6 overall. They resume Big 12 Conference action next week when they host crosstown rival Normal Community on Wednesday and are at Normal Community on Friday.
