HS Softball: Monticello Falls Short to Mattoon

Mattoon scored four runs in the first inning and it proved to the difference as they held off a late Monticello rally in a 4-3 win in non-conference high school softball action on Wednesday in Mattoon.

 

TrailiI=Ng 4-0 in the top of the sixth, Sadie Walsh and Cassidee Stoffel led off the inning with singles. Two batters later, Isabella Beery doubled in Walsh for the Sages' first run.  Ali Weidner followed with a single that scored both Beery and Lawhead -running for Stoffel - pulling Monticello within one run at 4-3.

 

Beery was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI while Weidner finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

 

Stoffel pitched a complete game for Monticello, allowing four runs on seven hits and striking out nine.
