Liam Smith and Aaron Volle went deep, leading Mt. Pulaski in a 14-2 rout of Warrensburg-Latham on Friday afternoon in Mt. Pulaski.
Smith started the fifth inning with a solo home run to put the Hilltoppers in front 14-4. Later in the frame, Volle homered to make it 16-4.
Mt. Pulaski answered a three-run first from the Cardinals with a five-run inning. Carter Clark drove in the first two of his game-high four runs with a single to cut the deficit to 3-2. Tyler Cross walked in the tying run with the bases loaded. The Hilltoppers added two more to go up 5-3.
Preston Cowan doubled in two more in the Hilltoppers' second inning to put them up 7-3.
Chance Payne doubled in Eric Cooper to put Mt. Pulaski up 9-3 in the third. Later, Clark singled in two more with another single for a 12-3 lead.
Clark was 2-for-4 with four RBIs. Volle finished 1-for-2 with two runs batted in while Smith was 1-for-3. Cowan and Cross each drove in two for the Hilltoppers.
Eastyn McKenzie was 1-for-2 with two RBIs for the Cardinals while Nathan Souther finished 1-for-3 with an RBI double.
Warrensburg-Latham wraps up the regular season at 23-6. They will take on Maroa-Forsyth in a Regional semifinal on Wednesday of next week.
Mt. Pulaski goes to 20-5. They will travel to Monticello for a tune-up game ahead of their Regional action next week.
