In a game heard on WEZC and online at dewittdailynews.com, Carter Foran was brilliant again on the mound and led Monticello past Bismarck-Henning 3-1 in a Class 2A Sectional semifinal victory on Wednesday from the Workman Family Baseball Field at Millikin University in Decatur.
Foran went five innings of one-run ball with six strikeouts. He permitted a run on three hits and issued two walks. The senior followed up a brilliant performance last Wednesday in a 2-1 win over Tri-Valley in Regional action.
Foran was the ServPro of Piatt/DeWitt Counties Player of the Game.
The Sages broke a scoreless tie in the third when Brian Wiltgen, Foran, and Eric Arnold hit back-to-back-to-back singles to start the inning - Arnold's single was a bunt single that caught the whole diamond by surprise.
With the bases loaded and nobody out, Eli Craft scored Wiltgen with a sac-fly to center field to make it 1-0. Ike Young then singled in Foran to make it 2-0.
Monticello was thrown out at third base four times to end an inning during the game - squandering opportunities to grow its lead.
They added the final run of the game when Arnold scored from third after Caden Kelemenic balked to make it 3-1.
Arnold finished 2-for-2 with an RBI. Wiltgen was 2-for-3 with a triple while Craft was 2-for-2 with an RBI for the Sages.
Monticello improves to 29-6 overall. They will go for their first sectional Championship since 2021 on Saturday at 1 pm. They play the winner of the Wednesday late game in Decatur between Tolono Unity and Normal U-High. Hear the action on 95.9 FM WEZC and online at dewittdailynews.com.
