In a game heard on WEZC and online at dewittdailynews.com, a terrific baseball season came to an end for Monticello as they fell short to Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin 4-3 in a Class 2A Supersectional high school baseball thriller from Lincoln Land Community College in Springfield.
Andy Attonacci capped a big start for the Cycles with a two-run home run in the first inning.
Monticello would battle back, taking advantage of SHG miscues in the third and fourth innings to tie the game at 3-3.
The Cyclones got the ultimate winning run across in the bottom of the fourth on a Drew Ward sac-fly to center field to make it 4-3.
Monticello veered from Carter Foran on the mound to start the game, who had been terrific in the postseason, electing to turn to junior Heyden Romano. Romano did not record an out, and all four of the batters he faced reached base, three scored.
But the Sages were rescued by sophomore Matthias Rudolph, who pitched five innings of one-run ball and kept Monticello in the game and allowed them to come back. Rudolph's five innings earned him the ServPro of Piatt/DeWitt Counties Player of the Game.
Monticello finishes the season 30-7 overall.
