Normal U-High used a high-powered offense and a dominant pitching performance to shut out Normal West 10-0 in non-conference high school baseball season opening for both teams Wednesday at Wildcat Field in Normal.
The Pioneers jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the first inning and added another in the third. U-High extended the margin with two runs in the fourth, sixth, and seventh innings to pull away, while holding the Wildcats to just four hits on the afternoon.
Landon Stelte led the Wildcat offense, finishing 2-for-3 at the plate. Sam McCully and Jack Steidinger each added a hit for West. Ty Bachman and Stelte both recorded stolen bases in the contest.
Bachman took the loss on the mound, striking out six batters over 2 1/3 innings of work. Jasper Pomis provided a long relief appearance, striking out six and allowing two earned runs over 2 2/3 innings.
Parker Roop earned the win for the Pioneers, striking out four and allowing just one hit over 3 2/3 innings. Caleb Hornbrook led the U-High attack - going 4-for-4 with two RBIs. Griffin Meyer and Roop each added two hits in the win.
Normal West falls to 0-1 on the season. U-High is 1-0. The Wildcats are back in action Thursday afternoon as they travel to take on Morton at 4:30 PM before heading to Alabama next week.
