Local law enforcement is issuing a new warning as the Lincoln Police Department reports an uptick in residents falling victim to various forms of scams.
Lincoln Police Chief Joe Meister says the frequency of these incidents is concerning, noting phone-based deception is the most prevalent threat, often targeting the elderly.
Chief Meister stresses legitimate organizations will never request payment through unconventional methods. One of the most common schemes involves scammers convincing victims that they owe a debt, then instructing them to purchase gift cards or "Green Dot" prepaid cards to resolve the balance.
The fraud extends beyond gift cards to include impersonation tactics. Scammers often pose as distant relatives, claiming they have been arrested and are in immediate need of bond money. Chief Meister reminds residents that Illinois is a "no-cash bail" state, making any call requesting bond money a red flag.
If you suspect you have been targeted, Chief Meister advises taking immediate action to report the incident, noting the department handles these cases with the same seriousness as any other crime.
