HS Baseball: Late Surge Powers Monticello Past Westville in Regional Action

In a game heard on WEZC and online at dewittdailynews.com, a nine-run sixth inning opened the floodgates and pushed Monticello past Westville, 11-2, in high school baseball Class 2A Regional semifinal action in Monticello on Thursday.

With the game tied at 2-2, going to the bottom of the sixth inning, miscues and walks allowed Monticello to send 13 batters to the plate. Grant Kiger hit a ground-rule double and a two-run single in the sixth. Koyie Williams walked and scored, then had an RBI single later in the sixth.

Heyden Romano went the distance on the hill for Monticello. The senior struck out six, walked four, and permitted just one hit. He worked through a bases-loaded, nobody-out jam in the fourth inning, permitting a two-run suicide squeeze. But settled down to retire nine of the final ten batters he faced - including an inning-ending double play in the sixth.

Monticello goes to 30-4 overall. They take on rival Tolono Unity for a Regional Championship on Saturday at 11 am. Hear the action on 95.9 FM WEZC and online at dewittdailynews.com.
